Keeping New Year’s resolutions

Keeping New Year’s resolutions

Have you made a New Year’s Resolution? Be Warned!
Stats suggest 1/3 of us give up after just 1 month.

Now, don’t panic. You can succeed. Whether you want to get fitter or act more sustainably – you can do it. Follow our advice to make those resolutions stick.

1. PICK ONE RESOLUTION

If you try to do too much, you are more likely to fail. Be sensible and pick one resolution to focus on. By all means – if you quickly achieve it, create another one.

2. BE REALISTIC

Don’t try to run a marathon in 4 weeks if you’ve never run before. You need an achievable goal – and a realistic time frame.

3. MAKE PLANS

Do you need to read up on quitting smoking? Or want a fitting for the right running shoes? Get the necessary equipment, materials or knowledge to help you achieve your goal.

4. GET SUPPORT

Do you know someone who shares your goal? If so, reach out to each other for support. Share tactics for achieving success.

If you don’t know anyone directly – support groups could be the prop you need. Meet-ups or online forums both work – just having like-minded people to talk to will spur you on when you are feeling weak.

5. WRITE IT DOWN, SHOUT IT OUT

Tell people about your resolution. Write it down. Read it over and over. The more “official” you make your resolution the more likely you will keep to it.

Consider writing a resolution card which you can stick to your fridge and refer to it every morning.

6. FAILURE HAPPENS

OK, this may seem a little negative, but don’t give up if you have one slip up. Assess the reasons for why you made a mistake. Then just adapt what you’re doing so you don’t do the same thing again.

7. REWARD YOURSELF

Who doesn’t like a treat for a job well done?! Reward your actions. Set yourself goals. Enjoy a simple pleasure when you reach them. It might just give you that extra piece of motivation to keep going.

Whatever you’ve chosen for your New Year’s Resolution. Good luck. Focus on the reasons why you made the decision and stick to it. You got this!
